Heat pump & air conditioning calculator

Find the right size for your home or office in under a minute.

Answer a few quick questions about your space, insulation and sun (and for offices, people and equipment), and we'll recommend a size, show matching products from our range, and estimate your price and running costs.

How the calculator works

Simple maths, checked by a person

This is an initial sizing estimate based on a standard industry approach. Every home is different, so our team confirms the final size at your free home assessment.

1. Room volume

Length × width × ceiling height gives the volume of air we need to heat or cool.

2. Insulation factor

We multiply by about 50 W per m³ for new, well-insulated homes, 55 W for average homes, and 65 W for older, colder or damper homes.

3. Windows and sun

Large or single-glazed windows add about 10%. A sunny, north-facing room needs about 7% less.

4. Whole home or whole floor

For ducted systems we size for the heated floor area and allow that not every room runs at full demand at the same time. Offices are heated as one space during work hours, so we allow for more of it running at once.

5. Offices and cooling

People and equipment give off heat, so offices often need more cooling than heating. For offices we add heat from people, computers and lighting, check both heating and cooling, and size for the larger of the two.

Why bigger isn't always better

What happens if a heat pump is too big?

An oversized unit switches on and off more often, can swing the room temperature, costs more upfront and may wear out sooner. The right size runs smoothly and efficiently.

What if I'm between two sizes?

That's common. For rooms that are cold, damp or used for long periods, the larger size is usually the better fit. For small, sunny or well-insulated rooms, the smaller one is. We'll help you decide at your free home assessment.

Does this work for offices and businesses?

Yes. Choose "Office or business" at the top. We add heat from people, equipment and lighting, check cooling as well as heating, and show systems from our range that suit. Larger floors, server rooms and multi-floor buildings are designed with you at a free site assessment.

Does this include installation?

Prices shown are supply and install, plus GST, as listed on our products page. Installation difficulty, pipe runs and wiring can affect the final price, which we confirm at your free assessment.

Can I pay over time?

24 months interest free is available, subject to finance approval. The monthly figure here is an illustration only.
